Farming and ranching were the mainstays of this area in Chula Vista, California, once known as the Janal and Otay ranchos, Mexican land granted to José Antonio Estudillo. At 25,000 acres, Otay Ranch is nearly the size of San Francisco. Planning for the site began in the 1980s. More than 10,000 homes have been built since then, with about 18,000 more. The first phase of the massive Eastlake development broke ground in 1986 and will eventually house 8,900 dwellings and 20,000 residents. The name Otay Ranch derives from the historic Rancho Otay. The Eastlake development was originally Eastlake.
In Otay Ranch, there’s around (really, 12-sided) bird barn off Hard Rock Road, built in the 1930s by mining magnate Stephen Birch. Its shape was supposed to protect quail from getting smothered in the corners of a traditional barn. And Eastlake has a lake — a 21.5-acre artificial body of water at Eastlake Shores Beach Club. The nearby Otay Lakes offer more lakeside recreation. Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman and former Padres player Adrián González is an Eastlake High School alum, although his family lived in Bonita while he attended high school. Brother Edgar also played for the Padres.
After a planning process, it took just a few short years for Otay Ranch (Chula Vista, CA), a Baldwin & Sons Community, to grow into a vibrant community that combines the best old-style neighborhoods with the latest community design. Today, residents enjoy the community’s pedestrian parks, stroll, bike along with-year with the extensive network of trails, paseos, and promenade streets, and meet with friends and neighbors at Otay Ranch Town Center. Since 1956, Baldwin companies have built more than 20,000 homes and created booming, thriving neighborhoods and communities spanning from Los Angeles to San Diego. Baldwin & Sons is a collaborative partnership between Al Baldwin and his sons Ron, Steve, Shawn and their respective home-building companies, Pacific Coast Communities, Heritage Building & Development, and Baldwin & Sons.
Receiving a Beautification Award from the city of Chula Vista and the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce in 2000, Orchard Park is praised for “the airy, spacious feeling the park creates for surrounding residences.” It is designed to serve residents within a 2-3 block area with a basketball court, playground, multi-purpose lawn, and trellis-covered picnic area.
